This November, citizens across Henderson County will go to the polls to vote for a new governor. Also on this ballot will be a question concerning Henderson County Schools. As you may know, our school board passed a tax levy to be strictly used for construction. That levy was challenged and is now on the November ballot, allowing our community as a whole to make this important decision.
The Nickel Ballot Initiative will increase property taxes by 5 cents on every $100 of property. (Motor vehicles are not included in this increase.) That "nickel" will generate $1,476,376 dollars locally and qualify for an additional $956,000 from the state every year to be used to renovate and construct school facilities. Over the past four years, members of this community have developed a strategic plan regarding every building of Henderson County Schools. Two schools are scheduled to be replaced over the next five to seven years, but EVERY school is in need of major renovation or repair.
We are grateful to our maintenance department who work tirelessly to make sure our facilities look good and function well for our students, but their attention and ingenuity can only go so far. Heating and air conditioning units are patched together to continue to provide a comfortable environment for learning; temporary walls offer only a portion of the sound barrier necessary to split large areas into functional learning spaces; storage closets, offices and modular units have been transformed into educational spaces which creates spatial challenges for students and staff.
By supporting the Nickel Ballot Initiative, you are investing in the facilities of Henderson County Schools, which will allow us to improve them and create the optimal space for our students to learn.  This site is full of information about the Nickel Initiative, its impact on Henderson County Schools and its impact on you, the taxpayer.
